Bon Secours Arts  and Science College for Women, MANNARGUDI

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

B.Sc. Chemistry
(3 Years)

The captivating Chemistry department has been established in the year 2020 with 16 students. The department is functioning with the energetic spirit of practising the students towards realistic and current tendencies in Chemistry. This course prepares the students to be professional chemists and also serves as a foundation for other fields as well such as biology and medicine.

The curriculum offers a thorough fundamental knowledge of the major fields in chemistry, incorporating the general areas of inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, and in addition many more other specialized courses including analytical, nuclear, and biophysical chemistry and chemical biology.

Students would gain laboratory experiences in inorganic and organic synthesis, analytical methods, physical chemical measurements, spectroscopy, biochemical engineering, and chemical methods in nuclear technology..

Department Mission

To create clever graduates with a capability to be a competent chemist and also in the connected field of science and also to nurture them to accomplish varied scientific positions around the globe

Programme Objectives (PO)

The objectives of B.Sc Chemistry Programme are

  1. To explain and build models of chemical structure.
  2. To use Library and internet resources to locate information on chemical topics.
  3. To use understanding and the use of safe laboratory practices.
  4. To explain chemical concepts.
  5. To interpret key events in the history of science in light of society at the time.
  6. To evaluate ethical issues in science and technology as they relate to society.

Programme Educational Outcomes (PEO)

The expected outcomes after completing the program would be:

  1. Provide chemistry majors with a strong background in the five major sub-disciplines of chemistry – organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry and biochemistry – with up-to-date coursework in each area.
  2. Provide biochemistry majors with a strong background in organic and analytical chemistry and biochemistry, while emphasizing the interface between chemistry and biology.
  3. Provide students with relevant laboratory and research experiences designed to deepen their understanding of chemical principles, while simultaneously teaching students safe, responsible laboratory practices.
  4. Demonstrate the use of modern technology in chemistry by giving students direct, hands-on experiences with up-to-date instrumentation, computer software, and methods of information retrieval, both in coursework and in the laboratory setting.
  5. Provide students with opportunities, through regular coursework and research experiences, to practice active learning and develop their critical thinking, communication, and technical skills.
  6. Provide opportunities for students to become familiar with the chemical professions and professional activities of practicing chemists and biochemists.
  7. Provide students with a more holistic view of chemistry through emphasis on its interdisciplinary nature by using specific examples to illustrate connections between chemistry and other science areas and the liberal arts.
  8.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO)

  1. Gain the knowledge of Chemistry through theory and practical.
  2. To explain nomenclature, stereochemistry, structures, reactivity, and mechanism of the chemical reactions.
  3. Identify chemical formulae and solve numerical problems.
  4. Use modern chemical tools, Models, Chem-draw, Charts and Equipment.
  5. Know structure-activity relationship.
  6. Understand good laboratory practices and safety.
  7. Develop research-oriented skills.
  8. Make aware and handle the sophisticated instruments/equipment
