Bon Secours Arts  and Science College for Women, MANNARGUDI

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

B.Sc. Physics
(3 Years)

The Department of Physics has been productively functioning since 2019. Modern Physics is a branch of pure science, which deals with the realistic analysis of physical phenomena that takes place around the universe. The interdependence between the forces and the natural laws played an inevitable role in the functioning of the world which has been taught in a practical manner. The department has a very unique and well equipped individual Laboratory for the UG students and they are specially trained with ideal skill oriented workshop practices. This has been one of the unique features of the department right from its origin. The department has an exclusive library for the members of faculty and students for the effortless reference.

Zenith association is established to perpetuate the innovative and problem solving skills of our students through organizing programmes such as quiz, Workshops, seminars, etc. As a supplementary, internship programmes are also mandatory as part of the curriculum.

Department Mission

This program creates a rapport with the current state of learning and to enhance research with modern gadgets and by offering Individual apparatus to widen the experimental skills.

Programme Objectives (PO)

The objectives of B.Sc Physics Programme are

  1. To provide the students with a broad understanding of the physical principles of the universe
  2. To help them develop critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills
  3. To empower them to think creatively and critically about scientific problems and experiments
  4. To build students confidence in their ability to solve challenging problems

Programme Educational Outcomes (PEO)

The expected outcomes after completing the program would be:

  1. Gain a working knowledge of fundamental concepts in basic area of physics such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics.
  2. Ananlyze physical problems and develop correct solutions using natural laws.
  3. Read, Understand and interpret physical formation-verbal, mathematical and graphical.
  4. Gain a working knowledge of fundamental concepts in basic area of physics such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  5. Become confident and versatile problem-solvers who use physical intuition together with analytic and qualitative skills to study, model and understanding the world around us.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO)

  1. The students will acquire a scientific knowledge of the fundamental principles of Physics through study of Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory, Optics, Heat and Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, Solid State Physics, Nuclear Physics, Modern Physics, Quantum Mechanics and other areas of Physics.
  2. The students will learn to work independently as well as a group during laboratory sessions, projects and student seminars.
  3. Provide knowledge about material properties and its application for developing technology to ease the problems related to the society.
  4. Relate the structure of atoms & subatomic particles.

Lab Facilities

The team at bon secours Physics (Zenith) Laboratory understand this ”Fundamental to Success”. The objective of Physics Laboratory is to demonstrate the principles of experimental practice in Physics. And to show how measurement, experiment design & modern instrumentation can be used most effectively and to encourage the creative use of experimental & theoretical physics in areas which may be unfamiliar.

In the Physics Laboratory the students have a full- hand operation of measuring instruments, such as, Vernier Calipers, Screw Gauze, Spectrometer, Traveling Microscope and Telescope are some to mention. The students are also provided with full hands-on experiences in optical instruments, such as, Optical benches, Sodium Vapour Lamp and Mercury vapour Lamp.

And still the Physics Laboratory provides the students an exposure to Electronics basics and also advanced concepts and instrumentation for semiconductors from the Physics (core) point of view such as FET, Zener diode, Junction diode, Logic Gates, Demorgan’s and so on.

The emphasis is focused upon experiment design & use of Core & Applied Physics fundamentals; lab is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment’s not only in the field of Pure but also in Applied Physics.
