The history of the English Department began with the founding of the College in Mannargudi in 2018. The Department has worked to provide students with the holistic education they need as well as the English language proficiency needed for research and employment since its founding. Our Department boasts the distinction of being the only Department to interact with every undergraduate student. The English literature B.A. programme debuted in 2018, followed by M.A. programme in 2021 respectively.

The Department activities include MOUSAI Association, which aims to discover and nurture the many talents of the students while also revealing the diligent efforts made by the faculty members to shape the students’ overall personalities. In addition to this, Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Special Lectures are regularly held. In addition to teaching British and American literature, the department offers knowledge in Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, Subaltern Literature, Postcolonial Literature, Indian Diasporic Literature, Women’s Writing, News Reporting and Editing, Introduction to Journalism, and Indian Writing in English.

To inculcate the sparking aspects of language skills and the diversity of past and present Literature and to explore salubrious success by learning life skills.

Programme Objectives (PO)

The objectives of The Department of English are:
BA – English
  1. To empower themselves with LSRW and critical thinking skills
  2. Develop sensitivity towards issues affecting society and become catalysts for social change.
  3. Create their own works of literature in various genres.
  4. Apply language skills for career growth
MA – English
  1. Appreciate the perspectives of English literature and world literatures across cultures and genres.
  2. Demonstrate English language teaching and training skills
  3. Gain hands-on experience in applied research methodology on a specific research problem in English.
  4. Become catalysts for social change based on their heightened awareness on pertinent issues like the environment, gender, discourse and the literature of the marginalized.

Programme Educational Outcomes (PEO)

  1. Students will receive a program that includes skills development, and employability aspects.
  2. Students will prove their understanding of the functions and historical development of the English language.
  3. Students will demonstrate a broad and integrated understanding of literary history, theory and teaching.
  4. Students will have the ability to analyze literary texts and to use and acknowledge literary terms and features in texts.
  5. Students will be develop and implement research projects, and localize, evaluate, organize and integrate information efficiently.
  6. Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the literature, genres, epochs and critical approaches of British, American and World Literature.
  7. Graduates will demonstrate the leadership skills to initiate lead and deliver the best performance together with the team members

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO)

  1. Comprehend various forms of literature like prose, poetry, drama and fiction
  2. Apprehend different cultures and cultural sensibilities around the world
  3. Perspectives of literary movements that existed in different ages.
  4. Develop the knowledge of grammatical system of English language.
  5. Define literary theory and terms in criticism.
  6. Develop four language skills LSRW.
  7. Write analytically in different formats like essays, reviews, research papers etc.
  8. Scope of employability and entrepreneurship in the field of Media and Journalism, Teaching, Public Relations, Human Resource, Civil Service, Creative Writing etc.
